Platform owners can use Layer’s MCP server to power internal agents, support workflows, demos, and operational analysis across the businesses they serve. In platform mode, an agent can set the active business for a session, query Layer financial data, and use those results to explain customer trends or identify follow-up actions.
Platform-level tools are experimental and may change as Layer’s MCP offering evolves.

Customer Support And Operations

A platform-owned agent can use set_active_business to inspect the right customer business during a support workflow. From there, the agent can retrieve bank transactions, report summaries, balance sheet data, or the chart of accounts to answer questions faster. Examples include:
  • Investigating why a customer’s report looks incomplete.
  • Checking whether uncategorized transactions are affecting financial statements.
  • Finding recent transactions that match a support question.
  • Explaining the current state of a customer’s bookkeeping setup.

Portfolio-Level Insights

Platform tools can also support analysis across multiple customers when the platform’s agent controls which business is active. The agent can iterate across selected businesses, gather consistent report or transaction signals, and summarize patterns for internal teams. Examples include:
  • Identifying customers with persistent uncategorized transaction volume.
  • Comparing customer profitability patterns using platform-mode reporting tools.
  • Finding businesses that may need bookkeeping attention before month end.
  • Preparing account-management summaries before customer check-ins.
Platform agents should validate authorization before calling set_active_business with customer business IDs.
